Members and Staff have embraced the Eagles for Children Charity transforming the lives of local children in need.   This year we raised $9,301.40.  The Committee received applications sponsored by Members and worked carefully to allocate 100% of the funds raised to those charities.

Thank you to the Members for sponsoring the applications received.   Our committee, chaired by Pete & Sarah Kepic, along with Barry & Lynn Connelly, Mike & Sue McDermott, Matt & Susan Paroly, and Jim & Pam Ruthven, granted funds to the following charities:

Detroit Christo Rey High School – $3,000

Purchased one month of hot breakfast for 335 students coming from economically disadvantaged families in Detroit, who otherwise typically miss breakfast.

Lighthouse Children’s Services – $6,301.40

Supporting the Children’s Summer Food Program in Oakland County.   When school is out for summer break, many local families are unable to provide sufficient food for their children without the free and reduced breakfast and lunches provided at school.   Child hunger can have devastating developmental and educational impacts such as chronic health issues, increased hospitalization, greater risk of truancy, lower reading and math scores, increased behavioral problems, and lagging in social, emotional and cognitive skills.

In November, 2017, nine country clubs awarded $362,147.40 to local childrens’ charities.  Since year one of Eagles for Children the total is $1,190,559.40.  Birmingham Country Club members can be proud of their part in transforming the lives of children in need.

What is Eagles for Children?

The idea of using one great moment on the golf course, “an eagle,” to benefit thousands – or potentially millions of children in need, inspired program co-founders Hal Zaima and Don Kegley to test the Eagles for Children program at Oakland Hills Country Club in 2012. Three other area clubs agreed to join, and by the end of the season, the clubs had raised nearly $40,000, which was awarded to 14 different children’s charities in the Detroit Metropolitan area.

The Eagles for Children concept is simple:

-Each member pledges a minimum of $2 for every eagle scored by fellow members and their families at their club.

-Golfers report their eagles to the pro shop.

-The club’s accounting department tracks the donations and bills each member according to their tax-deductible pledge per eagle.

-At the end of the golf season, a committee from your club meets to determine which children’s nonprofit organizations will benefit from the generosity of your membership. 100% of the funds collected from each club is granted out each season.
