June 2017 is marking the completion of an extensive, $8 million capital improvement plan at Birmingham (Mich.) Country Club that has renovated the club’s golf course, clubhouse and athletic facilities, reports Joseph F. Basso, MCM, CCE, the club’s General Manager/Chief Operating Officer

The process started with membership approval in the fall of 2014 and took over 30 months to complete, Basso reports. Golf course renovations included in the project included new irrigation and drainage systems, bunker renovations and additions, and complete changes in turf varieties from tee to green.

The club also leveraged the necessary closure of the golf course to complete $2.4 million in improvements to its clubhouse by renovating its banquet space and member-dining areas, including included the addition of a second casual dining area. Existing tennis facilities were also renovated and platform tennis and supporting facilities were added to create a racquets complex.

The final phase of the Birmingham CC capital improvement plan completed renovations to the bathhouse and added a new, two-level food-and-beverage outlet, The Dive Bar and High Dive.

The capital project was timed to coincide with the 2016 celebration of the club’s centennial, Basso notes.
