This April, we look forward to welcoming our new Director of Golf Instruction, PGA Member, Gary Bashford.

Gary started his professional golf career at Birmingham CC after arriving from England in 1993.  Gary mentored under Carl Patron and began to learn all aspects of being a PGA Professional. He quickly became known for his  distinct British sense of humor and for his passion and knowledge of the game.

After 7-years at the club with progressively responsible rolls, Gary moved to California where he tutored under renowned professionals Martin Hall and Tom Patri, and began specializing in golf instruction.

Gary is a now a nationally recognized, PGA award-winning instructor who has presented his theories on developing a “positive learning experience” to thousands of students and PGA peers and was recently honored as Northern California’s PGA Teacher of the Year in 2017.  By incorporating the latest V1 Video and Trackman technology with a simple, easy-to-understand set of  principles.

Gary has propelled 13 junior students to collegiate D1 scholarships, has served as the primary swing coach for the CAL-Berkeley Woman’s Golf Team for three years, and has coached five Korn Ferry Touring Professionals including, CA-based Cody Blick. Gary’s recreational students praise his ability to create an enjoyable and effective learning environment in a game that can often be over-complicated. From his original classes and development programs he looks forward to further developing the instruction program at Birmingham Country Club.

He continues to enjoy tournament golf and regularly competes in local and national PGA events.

Gary keeps close contact and visits regularly with his family in England and married his favorite golf partner, Julie, last May in San Francisco.  He is thrilled to be returning to the club he enjoyed so much at the beginning of his career.

Please join me in welcoming Gary when he arrives in Birmingham this spring.

Best,

Joe Herbstreith
